“If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you” (John 15:7).

It was night and the sky was black; no stars could be seen. Even though I had spent many nights hiding in my room since arriving in Northern Ireland, I decided this would be the night to face my giant. The Bible tells us as Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him (I Samuel 17:48). So, I opened the kitchen door and walked out into the dark to face my giant.

I walked out into the dark night armed with my “one prayer that changed everything.” My children and my husband needed me to be armed with this one prayer. If I did not confront my giant and arm myself with this kind of prayer, my family would not have the wife and mother they deserved. They deserved me to be strong and not fearful. They deserved me to face that fear and not run from it anymore. I also deserved for me to face the fear.

As a little girl I remember many nights my grandmother would take me from the parsonage to the church to pray. The church would be dark inside with only a small light in the altar area. But the peace I felt as I lay under that pew and listened to her pray! I knew I wanted to give my children the same feeling of peace in our home.

My desire that night was so strong to be strong. “Therefore I say unto you, what things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them” (Mark 11:24).

So I met my giant whom I feared in the dark that night and my life changed. I’m not saying I still do not have battles, but now I know how to fight them and win. I fight them by facing them in prayer. The war is not over, but each battle I win brings me closer to victory!

Note: Cindy McFarland is married to her childhood sweetheart. Together they have seen the good and the other stuff. But God’s blessings have outweighed the other stuff and have given them three amazing children and now three amazing grand babies. Together they have been involved in missions in the countries of Northern Ireland and Ireland for twenty-one years.
